FAMOUS GARDENS
A love of learning and an endless search for inspiration means I never stop seeking out new experiences, and that passion has taken me to work in some of the most celebrated and beautiful gardens in the world.
These four are particularly special to me.
Tresco Abbey Garden, Isles of Scilly
Just 28 miles off the Cornish coast lies the world-famous Tresco Abbey Garden holding a vibrant and extraordinary collection of more than 2,000 exotic species from the southern hemisphere and subtropics. I worked across different areas of the gardens, including the specialist propagation greenhouses, surrounded by astonishing bursts of colour and lush planting, with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters just beyond.
RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey
The flagship garden of the RHS and home to one of the largest plant collections in the world, RHS Wisley is a place of extraordinary horticultural depth and inspiration. I was fortunate enough to intern there one summer, deadheading in the rose gardens and replanting the iconic Long Borders with late summer blooms. An experience that has informed my practice ever since.
RHS Rosemoor, North Devon
Nestled in the hills of North Devon, RHS Rosemoor is a truly enchanting garden. I worked across all areas during my stay, from planting up herbaceous borders to seed collecting in the wildflower meadows, gaining a broad and grounding experience across the seasons. The hot garden in particular, remains a constant source of inspiration, vibrant and uplifting whatever the weather.
Giardini Botanici Hanbury, Italy
Perched on the La Mortola promontory near Ventimiglia, the Hanbury Botanic Gardens are an abundant treasure trove of Mediterranean planting. The gardens gently wind down towards the sea with cobbled paths leading you through forests of eucalyptus, bamboo groves, giant agaves. Working alongside the wonderful Carolyn Hanbury, I had the rare opportunity to learn about true Italianate planting style first-hand, gaining an invaluable understanding of how to achieve an authentic Mediterranean scheme in situ.
